Caring for Public Art in the Park

Many neighbors have already fallen in love with Nurturing Tree, the beautiful sculpture by local artist and SPNA Arts Committee Chair Judith Modrak that has become a cherished part of Stuyvesant Square Park.

Recently, the sculpture sustained damage after being climbed on and handled roughly, though thankfully, it is already being carefully repaired.

Public art is created to be enjoyed by everyone, and we ask all park visitors to help care for these shared works by treating them gently and respectfully. Sculptures are not designed for climbing or rough play, and preserving them helps ensure they continue to bring beauty, reflection, and inspiration to the community for years to come.

Parents, teachers, and caregivers: thank you for helping children understand how to engage respectfully with public art and shared community spaces.
