Creatures of NY: Stenciling Squirrels

Join artist, writer, and educator Shawne Cooper for the second session of Creatures of NY, a playful outdoor art workshop series in Stuyvesant Square Park.
This month’s workshop, Stenciling Squirrels, explores stencil-making and layering techniques inspired by the small creatures that animate New York City parks and neighborhoods. Participants will gather around communal tables for a relaxed, welcoming, creative experience rooted in observation, imagination, and community connection.
The opening session, Drawing Dogs, introduced participants to blind contour drawing—a surprising and accessible technique that encourages slow looking, curiosity, and creative freedom rather than technical perfection. Continuing that spirit, Stenciling Squirrels is designed for all ages and skill levels.
No drawing experience is necessary. Beginners, experienced artists, families, and curious park lovers are all welcome.
Supplies are provided. Donations are welcome.

About Shawne Cooper
Shawne Cooper is a New York City-based visual storyteller, urban sketcher, and creative instructor who leads public drawing sessions, workshops, and sketching adventures throughout the city. Her practice focuses on capturing everyday NYC scenes, museum exhibits, architectural landmarks, and neighborhood life, often combining sketching with creative writing.
A longtime Gramercy Park resident, Shawne has spent decades wandering through Stuyvesant Square Park, sketchbook in hand. This series is an invitation to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the everyday beauty of the neighborhood together.
