How Climate Change Reaches Our Neighborhood Park

In Stuyvesant Square Park, New Yorkers sit beneath old trees, pass beds of flowers, watch birds and squirrels, and find a measure of quiet amid the city’s noise. Parks remind us that, for all our concrete, machinery, and ambition, we are living organisms among other living things.

That refuge depends on care. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation manages and maintains Stuyvesant Square Park. The Stuyvesant Park Neighborhood Association supports the park through volunteer gardening, cleanup days, public programs, and advocacy. This work is an ongoing labor of love—and climate change is making it more important.

A changing climate reaches the park

Climate change may be planetary, but we experience it locally. The New York City Panel on Climate Change reports that the city will continue to warm and get wetter, with more extreme heat and growing risks from intense rainfall and inland flooding. Those changes affect not only buildings, streets, and transit systems, but also the trees, soil, plants, wildlife, and people in our parks.

Heat stresses trees and other vegetation, especially when high temperatures coincide with dry soil. Trees may conserve water by closing the pores in their leaves, limiting photosynthesis and growth. Sustained stress can leave them more vulnerable to insects, disease, and other damage. Birds, insects, and other animals also depend on vegetation for food, shelter, and nesting habitat, so changes affecting plants can move through the larger park ecosystem.

Heavy rain creates different pressures. When rain falls faster than soil and drainage systems can absorb it, water runs across the surface. That runoff can erode soil, expose roots, damage plantings, and carry pollutants. Coastal parks face additional dangers from sea-level rise and storm surge. Stuyvesant Square is not a waterfront park, but intense rainfall and heat remain part of the changing conditions under which its living systems must survive.

When warmer winters delay spring

Climate change does not alter every natural cycle as we might expect. A 2025 study of New York City parks found that warmer winters can delay spring leaf-out in some parks. Many temperate trees need a period of winter cold before they can fully respond to spring warmth. If they receive too little cold, leaves may emerge later—even as average temperatures rise.

The researchers found the strongest delay in medium-sized parks, while the effects varied with park size, vegetation, and the surrounding urban environment. The finding should not be treated as a prediction for every tree in Stuyvesant Square. It does show how warming can change the timing of urban nature in complicated ways. Those shifts may affect shade, cooling, carbon uptake, and relationships among plants and animals.

Parks help cities endure

Parks are affected by climate change, but they also shape the city’s response. Trees and other vegetation provide shade and cool the air. Soil and planted areas can absorb some rainwater. Park habitats support birds, insects, and other wildlife. Green spaces also give people places to walk, rest, gather, and recover from the pressures of city life.

Stuyvesant Square is one part of a larger citywide park system, where many neighborhoods care for green spaces through public stewardship, friends groups, and local volunteer work.

The benefits depend on each landscape’s health and design. A 2022 Central Park study, for example, found that wooded areas were cooler than nearby street-tree locations on the hottest day measured; maintained lawns with trees also provided cooling, though to a lesser extent. Stuyvesant Square is much smaller and should not be assumed to produce the same results. The larger lesson is clear: healthy, well-cared-for vegetation matters.

Resilience requires care

Like New Yorkers, our parks are resilient. But resilience does not mean that they can be taken for granted. Trees need healthy soil and room for their roots. Gardens require planting, watering, weeding, mulching, and monitoring. Public spaces need both professional management and neighbors willing to care for them.

No volunteer gardening day can solve climate change. It can, however, help strengthen this small shared natural space. It can help a garden endure, make damage visible sooner, deepen our knowledge of the park, and build a community prepared to protect it.
