Creatures of New York: Stenciling Squirrels
Sunday, June 28, 2026 — It was a beautiful summer afternoon in Stuyvesant Square Park, and participants gathered for Stenciling Squirrels, the second workshop in artist Shawne Cooper’s Creatures of New York, an outdoor visual arts series celebrating the park’s remarkable wildlife.
Participants observed one of the park’s most charismatic residents before creating their own squirrel-inspired artwork using stencils, drawing, and vibrant color. Whether seasoned artists or first-time creators, everyone was encouraged to slow down, look closely, and discover the joy of creative expression through careful observation and imagination.
Laughter, conversation, and creativity filled the park as participants transformed a sunny Sunday afternoon into a celebration of art, nature, and community. The workshop offered a reminder that Stuyvesant Square Park is not only a gathering place for people but also a thriving urban habitat whose everyday wildlife can inspire wonder and creativity.
The final workshop in the Creatures of New York series, Portraying Pigeons, will take place on Sunday, September 27, inviting participants to discover another of the park’s most fascinating—and often overlooked—neighbors.
